Study on the Concept of Monarch-fire(ÏÖûý) and Ministerial-fire(ßÓûý) in Zhu Dan-Xi(ñ¹Ó¡Í¢)`s Ministerial-fire Theory(ßÓûýÖå)

Abstract

|
|
Objectives : In ministerial-fire theory(ßÓûýÖå) of Zhu Dan-Xi(ñ¹Ó¡Í¢), the meanings of monarch-fire(ÏÖûý) and ministerial-fire(ßÓûý) described in papers published nowadays are not the same. Therefore, it is necessary to rebuild a clear concept.
Methods : To understand the relationships among `heaven(ô¸)`-`human(ìÑ)` and `name(Ù£)`-`position(êÈ)`, the core concept of the ministerial-1fire theory(ßÓûýÖå) of Zhu Dan-Xi(ñ¹Ó¡Í¢), I examined the relationships between `heaven(ô¸)` and `human(ìÑ)` in Neo-Confucianism(àõ×âùÊ) of Song(áä) Dynasty and reviewed the notes of Wang Bing(èÝ?) which were quoted by Zhu Dan-Xi(ñ¹Ó¡Í¢) to set the concept of monarch-fire(ÏÖûý) and ministerial-fire(ßÓûý). I studied relevant texts.
Results : In ministerial-fire theory(ßÓûýÖå) of Zhu Dan-Xi(ñ¹Ó¡Í¢), monarch-fire(ÏÖûý) is perceived as being from greed(ìÑé°) that can cause hyperactivity(ØÍÔÑ) of ministerial-fire(ßÓûý), whereas ministerial-fire(ßÓûý) is perceived as being able to control monarch-fire(ÏÖûý) by following the orders from heaven. This point of view is different from the past which recognized monarch-fire (ÏÖûý) as the owner and ministerial-fire(ßÓûý) as the servant.
Conclusions : Zhu Dan-Xi(ñ¹Ó¡Í¢) received the ideological impact of Neo-Confucianism, and accepted the notes of Wang Bing, recognized monarch-fire(ÏÖûý) as `name(Ù£)` and ministerial-fire(ßÓûý) as `position(êÈ)`, so he voiced the ministerial-fire theory(ßÓûýÖå) that perceived monarch-fire(ÏÖûý) as fire(ûý) of the five processes(çéú¼) of human body that came from greed, ministerial-fire(ßÓûý) as being in a position to hear the order from the `heaven(ô¸)` to control monarch-fire(ÏÖûý). But the concept of ministerial-fire(ßÓûý) which he set connoted a confusing meaning of `nature(àõ)` and `way(Ô³)` of Neo-Confucianism. In the later process to solve the problem, life-gate theory(Ù¤Ú¦ùÊàã) was raised, and many researchers had tried to remove the meaning of hyperactivity from the ministerial-fire(ßÓûý).
